" I just welded it a piece on, and soldered the rest... Wasn't going to touch it."
Fixed.
"I soldered the copper ends to the heart shaped glass". You can't weld glass! lol

The dumb one has appeared, I see.
I welded a steel ring and plate together, which is soldered onto the back end of the necklace with copper foil.
You can't just magically throw steel into something and expect it to solder together.
The ring of course, not yet welded on in that image. I hadn't finished the ring at that point.

I know this is a stupid question as we live on opposite sides of the world, but where do you get the stones? and what do you use to cut and polish it?
Sadly enough, I don't know how to solder, but I have a few people that can teach me. I also know how to semi-weld. Plasma cutters are more fun.
So do you use a piece of flexible metal around the side and then solder it on?
Now, for a real conversation to continue;
I'm going to need an explanation to these stones.
I could teach you to solder easily enough, via text/Skype, assuming you have the required tools/materials.
I agree, plasma cutters are far more fun, but also much less accurate, and with the nature of the gift, I wanted it to be perfect...
For soldering, I use a flux-core tin alloy.
To get that edge, I grind and wash the glass, dry it, then wrap a copper foil around it's now flat edge, after I've brought the edges tightly onto it, I brush flux over the copper edge.
Once that's done, I can just solder at will, basically the goal is melting an even coat over the edge.
Side note: Canada isn't on other side of the world <3
