Even framing your shots is a challenge in itself. If you are taking a group shot with an SLR, when you zoom in or out, it actually changes the shape of the picture itself, which most would never realize. If you take a picture barely fitting everyone in and go to print a nice sized picture (say, an 8x10 or 11x14), you're gonna be in for a shocker when the sides always get cut off with no hope of getting everyone in.
Plus, the auto setting of many cameras will inadvertently screw up the picture if you don't know what you're doing. Take for instance pictures in a room decently lit with standard flourescent lights. Most people would think the good amount of light will automatically mean good pictures. Random fact: Flourescent lights aren't actually white. They are actually a very bright shade of blue. Cameras see what they think is too much blue in the picture and automatically dump yellow (the opposite of blue in the color spectrum) into the picture to "fix" it, so you end up with white walls and objects looking a nasty yellow color, which is very difficult to adjust later, as the coloring will always still be a tad off.
